In a pleasantly surprising move, BioWare will launch Dragon Age: The Veilguard natively via Steam on PC, meaning there’s no need to download and install the fussy EA App.

What’s more, the game will arrive verified for Steam Deck, so you can continue your quest to defend Thedas while on the bus, train or toilet.

“There’s a few more surprises in store for later this summer,” BioWare’s Michael Gamble teased via social media platform X, sharing the news. “Here’s the first from the DAV team.”

Mario + Rabbids lead developer Davide Soliani is leaving Ubisoft after 25 years.

Soliani spent 11 years working on the two Mario + Rabbids games, released on Switch in 2017 and 2022 in conjunction with Nintendo. The developer is yet to reveal what he’ll be working on next, beyond embarking on “a new adventure”.

“Hi all folks. After 25 years, 11 of which beautifully spent working with Nintendo on Mario+Rabbids along the company of our incredible community of players, I have decided to leave Ubisoft to embark on a new adventure,” he wrote on social media site X. “I can’t say more now. Thanks a lot for everything, truly.”

Sure, TV seems to be doing a decent job of making video game adaptations that don’t utterly suck these days, but the movie world’s still waiting for its The Last of Us moment. Will it come in the form Gearbox’s soon-to-be-released Borderlands film? Probably not, but if it’s brightly coloured chaos you’re after, you can expect plenty of that judging by its newly released “final” trailer – which has been shared ahead of the movie’s August launch.

The Borderlands movie has, of course, been a long time coming; it was initially announced back in 2015, with Saw and Insidious co-creator Leigh Whannell at one point rumoured to be attached. Then, just as it looked like the project had been consigned to the celluloid graveyard, it unexpectedly resurfaced in February 2020…

More Marvel vs Capcom games could be on the way, following the forthcoming Marvel vs. Capcom: Fighting Collection Arcade Classics announced at last month’s Nintendo Direct.

Speaking to Dexerto, the collection’s producer Shuhei Matsumoto discussed the future of the franchise.

“The development team at Capcom has big dreams,” he said. “Maybe there is an opportunity for a new Marvel vs Capcom game. Maybe there is an opportunity for a new Capcom-based SNK game.”

UK spending on video games plummeted by 29.4 percent during the first half of this year, while music and video sales grew.

Physical game sales fell by 40 percent to £111.7m compared to the first six months of 2023, while digital download sales fell 23 percent to £236.9m.

The numbers, reported by the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA), reflect a “soft new release schedule”, according to its latest report.
